Forever 21 Credit Card

Big Lots is a discount department store that sells an assortment of goods ranging from pantry items to furniture. It has discontinued its credit card program, so you can't apply for a traditional store card. However, there are ways you still can get credit at Big Lots for certain items.

1. What is a store credit card?

The only difference between store credit cards and regular credit cards is that store credit cards are branded and associated with a specific retailer and its rewards program. Store credit cards allow cardholders to earn and redeem points when making purchases. Store credit cards appear first before credit cards because department stores used to offer special offers to customers to reward their loyalty to a particular store or brand. In addition to the standard rewards program, store credit cards offer in-store discounts and special rewards. Store credit cards have a cash back feature that gives you a discount when you spend money on the retailer's card.

2. What are the benefits of store credit cards?

A reasonable annual fee

Many great store rewards cards don’t have an annual fee.

Save money at your favorite stores

Store rewards cards have different rewards programs which are great ways to save money, especially you are a frequent customer of that shop. For example, My Best Buy Credit Card offers as much as 5% cash back.

Additional sign-up bonuses and benefits

Many store reward cards attract new customers with a sign-up bonus. What’s more, some store reward cards offer extra benefits, such as discounts, free shipping, a birthday gift and extended return policies.

Easy to get and can help you to build credit

Because of store credit cards’ high interest rates and low credit limits, they are easy to get with fair or poor credit. If you can use it responsibly, this is an opportunity to build up your score.

3. What do you need to apply for a store credit card?

Credit score

Banks approve much lower credit scores for store cards. Therefore, applying a store card is an ideal way for someone with a fair or poor credit score to rebuild his or her credit.

Credit card application

You can apply for a store credit card online, in-store or by email depending on the card. And you just need to fill in your personal information and submit your application. The credit card issuer will consider your credit reports and several different factors when reviewing your application to get an idea of your creditworthiness.

4. How to use a store credit card?

Read your credit card terms and conditions.

This will give you an idea of how you can earn rewards, when rewards will post and other information.

Take advantage of sign-up bonuses

Many reward credit cards provide sign-up bonuses, please remember to take advantage of sign-up bonuses before they expire.

Maximize your rewards

Reward credit cards offer many ways to help you to save money on everyday items and big-ticket purchases. Keep an eye out for earning double or triple rewards opportunities. In addition, you need to know when your reward points will expire.

Use two store rewards credit cards

Business credit cards can earn points when shopping in specific stores or buying a certain type of merchandise. So it is a good idea to apply for store credit cards according to your shopping habits to get more rewards. For example, if you are a Walmart regular for daily necessities, and you also need to fuel the car, you can prepare one Walmart credit card and one gas rewards card. But we don’t recommend you to take out too many cards at once, because each credit card application may make your credit score lower. So it’s best to add credit cards slowly and allow your credit to build over time.

Plan and budget

It is easy to become impulsive in getting rewards. Don’t spend more than your budget. Earning rewards is not a valid reason to go over your budget.

Pay your bill in full on time

Many store rewards credit cards provide rewards program, but tend to have higher interest rates. If you carry a balance, your interest charge may be more than your rewards. Therefore, we recommend you to pay the bill in full on time in order to avoid paying high interest.

What to Consider Before Applying a Big Lots Credit Card?

As the Big Lots credit card doesn’t have a reward system like some other store cards, the biggest draw is the financing options. As such, it is crucial to understand their deferred interest program. If you make a purchase over a certain amount and pay it off within a certain window, you won’t have to pay any interest. For purchases of $250 or more, you will have 6 months to pay the purchase off in full. If your purchase reaches $750 or more, then you will have up to 12 months to pay it off. If you don’t pay the purchase off in full within the time period, you will be subject to interest fees.

You should also be aware that the Big Lots store credit card can only be used in stores. Unfortunately, when you make a purchase online, you won’t be able to use your Big Lots credit card.

Is a Big Lots Credit Card right for you?

The Big Lots store credit card is great for most Big Lots customers. If you regularly shop at Big Lots, you will find that the credit card is a useful financing option. However, even if you only make the occasional large purchase at Big Lots, you will find that the 6 and 12 month interest-free financing options on large purchases are worth it. Of course, if you rarely shop at Big Lots and only make smaller purchases when you stop by, you probably won’t benefit from the use of a Big Lots store credit card.

Bottom Line

Not much going on in terms of rewards or sign-up bonus for the Big Lots Credit Card and sadly, with a sky-rocketing APR, I can’t say that this card has anything attractive going for it, unless you have bad credit and you’re looking to remedy your flailing credit score/credit history. With a decent credit limit, spending with the card could be alluring, but I recommend responsible and little usage per statement cycle. Surely since this card is limited to only Big Lots spending, it can’t be that alluring. Also, be sure to check out our complete list of Credit Card Promotions for other bonuses and offers.
