Forever 21 Credit Card

Everyone knows home improvements can be costly. And hiring a contractor? Even more so. That’s why many people choose the do-it-yourself option. This likely means you’re spending a lot of time (and money) at places like Lowe’s. So should you be using their store-branded credit card?

1. What is a store credit card?

The only difference between store credit cards and regular credit cards is that store credit cards are branded and associated with a specific retailer and its rewards program. Store credit cards allow cardholders to earn and redeem points when making purchases. Store credit cards appear first before credit cards because department stores used to offer special offers to customers to reward their loyalty to a particular store or brand. In addition to the standard rewards program, store credit cards offer in-store discounts and special rewards. Store credit cards have a cash back feature that gives you a discount when you spend money on the retailer's card.

2. What are the benefits of store credit cards?

A reasonable annual fee

Many great store rewards cards don’t have an annual fee.

Save money at your favorite stores

Store rewards cards have different rewards programs which are great ways to save money, especially you are a frequent customer of that shop. For example, My Best Buy Credit Card offers as much as 5% cash back.

Additional sign-up bonuses and benefits

Many store reward cards attract new customers with a sign-up bonus. What’s more, some store reward cards offer extra benefits, such as discounts, free shipping, a birthday gift and extended return policies.

Easy to get and can help you to build credit

Because of store credit cards’ high interest rates and low credit limits, they are easy to get with fair or poor credit. If you can use it responsibly, this is an opportunity to build up your score.

3. What do you need to apply for a store credit card?

Credit score

Banks approve much lower credit scores for store cards. Therefore, applying a store card is an ideal way for someone with a fair or poor credit score to rebuild his or her credit.

Credit card application

You can apply for a store credit card online, in-store or by email depending on the card. And you just need to fill in your personal information and submit your application. The credit card issuer will consider your credit reports and several different factors when reviewing your application to get an idea of your creditworthiness.

4. How to use a store credit card?

Read your credit card terms and conditions.

This will give you an idea of how you can earn rewards, when rewards will post and other information.

Take advantage of sign-up bonuses

Many reward credit cards provide sign-up bonuses, please remember to take advantage of sign-up bonuses before they expire.

Maximize your rewards

Reward credit cards offer many ways to help you to save money on everyday items and big-ticket purchases. Keep an eye out for earning double or triple rewards opportunities. In addition, you need to know when your reward points will expire.

Use two store rewards credit cards

Business credit cards can earn points when shopping in specific stores or buying a certain type of merchandise. So it is a good idea to apply for store credit cards according to your shopping habits to get more rewards. For example, if you are a Walmart regular for daily necessities, and you also need to fuel the car, you can prepare one Walmart credit card and one gas rewards card. But we don’t recommend you to take out too many cards at once, because each credit card application may make your credit score lower. So it’s best to add credit cards slowly and allow your credit to build over time.

Plan and budget

It is easy to become impulsive in getting rewards. Don’t spend more than your budget. Earning rewards is not a valid reason to go over your budget.

Pay your bill in full on time

Many store rewards credit cards provide rewards program, but tend to have higher interest rates. If you carry a balance, your interest charge may be more than your rewards. Therefore, we recommend you to pay the bill in full on time in order to avoid paying high interest.

What Lowe’s Credit Cards Are Available?

Lowe’s has credit cards for both consumers and businesses. For consumers, the primary offering is the Lowe’s Advantage Card. This is a store card, accepted only at Lowe’s and Lowes.com.

The Lowe’s Advantage Card gives you 5% off every purchase, with a few exceptions. (It can’t be combined with coupons or other discounts, for example, and certain products, services and brands aren’t eligible for the 5% off.) You get the 5% as a discount at the time of purchase, rather than as points or cash back to be redeemed later. That means you get your cardholder benefits immediately.

For purchases of $299 or more, you can choose six months of deferred-interest financing instead of getting 5% off. (Longer periods may be available during special promotions.) If you choose this option, however, you should understand what “deferred interest” means. When a card offers deferred interest, it’s not waiving the interest. Rather, it’s setting it aside until later. If you pay off your purchase by the end of the deferred-interest period, you’re fine. But if you carry a balance past the end of the period, you’ll be charged interest on your entire purchase, going back to the day you made it. Read more about the dangers of deferred interest.

The Lowe’s Advantage Card has no annual fee. As of November 2016, the ongoing APR was 26.99%.

How Do Lowe's Credit Cards Work?

If you are approved for the Lowe’s Advantage Card, you may use it for purchases at Lowe’s or Lowes.com.

When you make a purchase with the card, a 5% off every day discount is automatically applied after all other relevant discounts. There are of course some exclusions and restrictions.

For the special financing option (0% APR for 6 months if paid in full), customers must make a minimum purchase of $299. They will be given an option to take the 5% off or the special financing option.

To use the project financing benefit, customers must request this at the time of purchase. This cannot be combined with the 5% every day discount.

Benefits

Cardholder benefits include 5% off all purchases made with the Lowe's Consumer Credit Card, 0% interest for six months on purchases of $299 or more, or 36, 60 or 84-month special financing on purchases of $2,000 or more.

Customers may not combine the 5% off promotion with the six-month or special financing deals. With the six-month promotion, the cardholder must make minimum payments on time each month and pay off the full amount of the purchase by the end of the six months. Otherwise, the 0% interest provision is rescinded, and interest is applied to the purchase.

The 36, 60 and 84-month special financing offer is structured with fixed monthly payments for the respective number of months at a reduced APR of 3.99%, 5.99% and 7.99%.

Is the Lowe’s Card Right for You?

The Lowe's Consumer Credit Card offers great benefits to home improvement gurus and do-it-yourself types who make the most of their purchases at Lowe's. Even if the special financing deals are never used, a cardholder who buys a lot of home improvement products can save significant money each year with the 5% off promotion. For example, a customer who spends $2,000 per year at Lowe's saves $100 over the year by being a cardholder.

A person planning a major do-it-yourself home renovation who does not want to pay the entire cost up front can benefit from the card. By financing the cost over 36 months at 3.99% APR, the cardholder pays significantly less in interest than he or she would pay with most credit cards.

Bottom Line

If the smell of sawdust is your happy place, the Lowe's Advantage Credit Card may just be for you. The 5% discount is a nice, straightforward bonus, particularly if you don't like to bother with finding, clipping, or downloading coupons, and the financing offers can be good for those working on big home repair projects or updating major appliances.

Unfortunately, if your most-used tool is a roll of duct tape, you may not get much use out of the Lowe's card. Instead, pick an all-around credit card that offers awesome rewards or flexible financing so you can spend — and earn — wherever you go.
