What is Wells Fargo?

With the iconic six-horse stagecoach as its logo, Wells Fargo's history is perhaps the best known of the United States' "Big Four" banks.

Since 1852, Wells Fargo has grown with what would become the Western U.S. to today serve customers throughout the nation. Stagecoaches, ponies, steamships and the internet have all served as transportation of assets for what is today the third largest bank in the country.

Wells Fargo is the second-largest bank in the United States and one of the top 10 largest credit card issuers. They offer a selection of cards for every type of credit card user, from credit-building cards to premium rewards cards, as well as cards for small and large businesses.

Benefits and Features of Wells Fargo Credit Cards

Wells Fargo cards also offer certain features that are hard to find elsewhere:

Cash rewards — literally. Wells Fargo lets you redeem rewards in $20 bills right at the ATM. To do this, use your Wells Fargo debit card at a Wells Fargo-owned ATM.

Cell phone protection. You’ll receive up to $600 worth of coverage — after a $25 deductible — if your cell phone is damaged or stolen and you pay its monthly bill with an eligible Wells Fargo credit card.

Rewards of Wells Fargo Credit Cards

Wells Fargo rewards vary by card, but fall into two main categories:

Cash back

General rewards

Depending on which Wells Fargo cash back rewards card you carry, you will earn between 1 and 1.5 percent cash back on all purchases. Certain cards earn up to 5 percent on bonus categories like dining, gas and groceries.

All Wells Fargo general rewards cards are part of the Go Far Rewards program. These cards earn one point per net dollar on all purchases and up to five points on bonus categories. If you shop with selected retailers through Wells Fargo’s Earn More Mall, you can earn up to 10 points per dollar.

Go Far Rewards points can be redeemed in a variety of ways, including:

Credit toward Wells Fargo loans

Online auctions

Travel

Merchandise

Digital downloads

Gift cards

Wells Fargo rewards points have a value of 1 cent. For example, a $25 gift card costs 2,500 points through the program. Cash back rewards are interchangeable with points, and cardholders with cash back rewards cards are automatically registered for a Go Far Rewards account. With Go Far Rewards, you can exchange cash for points at a one-point-to-1-cent ratio to take advantage of reward offers.

Wells Fargo rewards points can be earned without limit but expire five years after you earn them.

Bottom Line

While they don’t totally blow away the competition, the best Wells Fargo® credit cards may do enough to warrant a spot in your wallet.

That phone insurance benefit alone is enough to make anybody who’s damaged their phone wonder why they didn’t have a Wells Fargo® card.

Whichever card you settle on, though, remember that your best bet is to use it responsibly and keep an eye on your credit utilization.
